Media convergence has been around as one of the most evolutionary phenomena in the field of communications. So what is media convergence? What are the cause and the outcome of this phenomenon? Let’s find out.

Definition

Media convergence is the merging of several media modes into one platform to produce a more dynamic experience for the media consumers. In simplicity, media convergence happens when you take this medium and that medium, blend them, and make one singular production.

The Causes

Chakaveh & Bogen (2007) suggested that media convergence is the outcome of three components:

  1. The concentration of media ownership: fewer media owners but more media properties.

  2. Technology: media technology enables content production in any medium.

  3. Government deregulation: media corporations are allowed to own different types of media in the same markets. (p. 812)

Such explanations indicate the three C’s of media convergence: content, corporations, and computing.

The Outcomes

The most typical outcome of media convergence is the smartphone. A smartphone merges several media, including print media (digital news and magazine websites or e-books), broadcast media (online radio, music apps, or video streaming sites), and digital media (internet, emails, or social media) (Leverage Edu, 2021).

Can you think of another example of media convergence?

In short, media convergence is a significant phenomenon in the communications field. It has changed how media corporations produce content and how media consumers engage with the message.

Reflection: I have known the term media convergence through some readings, but writing this blog gave me a chance to dig deeper into its insights. This first blog of the series gave me excitement and a better understanding of what the next posts should be.
