The Murrow Executive Education Program hosts its first certificate webinar series named “Social Your Media: How To Enlist, Engage, and Activate Your Audience” throughout October. The new program of The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, Washington State University develops the series specifically for health communication professionals who wish to create public health awareness campaigns on social media. The first webinar starts on Oct. 5.

The four-session webinar series goes live via Zoom on Tuesdays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. PST. Each session costs $50, while the whole package of four costs $150 alongside a certificate of completion. After the synchronous classes, participants can return to lessons anytime for 60 days by rewatching the recorded sessions and accessing the materials in the Canvas learning platform. Registration is still open.

The webinar series is the inaugural production of the Murrow Executive Education Program, which serves the needs of non-degree-seeking individuals interested in short courses and development opportunities since spring 2021.

“We want to embrace new educational pathways catered to individuals interested in micro-credentials, continuing education credits and professional certifications that enhance their career goals,” said Bruce Pinkleton, Ph.D., the dean of The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication.

Five scholarly and research professors in the college have collaborated to design and deliver the webinar series. Each webinar covers distinct topics such as social media theory and research, social media and audience engagement strategy, digital campaign metrics and reporting, digital storytelling across channels, and editorial calendar creation and management.

The Murrow Executive Education Program is giving out vouchers that waive the full fee of the webinar series to students and staff within WSU. Brandon Chapman, the director of marketing and communications at College of Education, Washington State University, registered for the whole series with no budget implication. The benefit was enticing, and the lecturers are thought-leaders in the field, Chapman said.

The establishment of Murrow Executive Education Program was a milestone for Murrow College. While it has been providing online bachelor’s and master’s degrees through asynchronous full-time classes, the college spent years of conversations to be able to produce a program for synchronous, non-credit courses.

“[The Murrow Executive Education Program] is almost like a whole other division of Murrow,” said Rebecca Cooney, one of the lecturers of the webinar series and one of the initiators of the program.

Cooney and her colleagues had had the concept of the program in mind but found no time, human resources nor technology to execute it. Not until spring 2021, by which COVID-19 had dramatically impacted education and Zoom became an essential tool in classrooms, did Cooney and her team see the auspicious reality and future for webinar-based programs such as the Murrow Executive Education. Today webinars have become the norms, Cooney said.

According to Conney, the Murrow Education Executive Program will be offering asynchronous certificate non-credit courses in the future.
